Transport volume increases 6.4% in January-September

Hungary's transport companies carried 240.692m tons of goods in the first nine months of 2006, 6.4% more than in the same period a year earlier.
Performance in terms of freight-ton-kilometres, rose 14.1% to 34.572 billion during the period, the Central Statistics Office (KSH) reported on Thursday. Freight carried abroad accounted for 59.642 million tons or 24.8% of total volume in January-September 2006, up 9.8% from the same period a year earlier. Of freight carried abroad, 30.034 million tons was carried by rail, 11.641 million tons by pipeline, 12.366 million tons by road and 5.591 million by waterway.
In terms of freight-ton-kilometers, performance outside of Hungary rose 17.9% year on year to 23.776 billion. Freight carried domestically increased 5.3% to 181.051 million tons in January-September 2006 compared to the same period a year earlier, and domestic performance improved 6.5% to 10.796 billion freight-ton-kilometers.
