The number of new mobile phone subscriptions fell in the first quarter of 2006 as Hungary's wireless market neared saturation; however, the number of post-paid subscribers rose, while the total number of pre-paid card subscribers fell, the Central Statistics Office (KSH) reported on Monday.

The number of mobile phone subscriptions increased 86,000 to 9.4 million in the first three months of 2006. At the end of March, there were 295,000 fewer pre-paid subscribers and 583,000 more post-paid subscribers. The number of mobile phone calls rose 16% in Q1 2006 over the same period a year earlier and turnover, in terms of minutes, was up 29%. Subscribers talked for 281 minutes a month on average and the average length per call was 1.7 minutes.
