More visitors spend fewer days in Hungary in Q1
The number of days spent by foreign tourists in Hungary dropped 7% in the first quarter, the Central Statistics Office (KSH) said on Thursday.
Despite the increasing number of visitors, they spent only Ft 155.56 billion, 75% of the amount during the same period a year earlier. Visitors spent an average Ft 9,500 per day, with spending on accommodation and catering accounting for 31.8% of the total.
Half of foreign visitors came to Hungary as transit visitors, with 21.4% coming to shop, 14.2% for pleasure and 1.8% for business.
Most foreign visitors were from Austria (1.195 million), followed by Romania (1.588 million) and Slovakia (1.515 million). Visitors from Romania and Slovakia were day-trippers for the most part.
Hungarians traveled abroad 3.5 million times in Q1 2006, 2.4% fewer than in the same period a year earlier. About 61.1% left the country for just one day, spending an average daily Ft 9,300.
Exports of tourism services totaled Ft 156 billion in Q1 2006, with imports totaling Ft 79 billion. The Ft 77 billion surplus is Ft 18 billion bigger than in Q4 2005 and Ft 4 billion more than in Q1 2005. First-quarter exports of tourism services, in forint terms, fell 24.8% year on year and imports declined 41.4% year on year.
