Hungary's tourism spending surplus reached HUF 280 billion in the fourth quarter, data released by the Central Statistical Office (KSH) show.

Spending by foreign tourists rose 44% to HUF 542 bln, lifted by inflation and the weaker forint. KSH noted that their spending was 6% higher than in Q4 2019, the year before the pandemic.

Visitors from Austria spent HUF 83 bln in Hungary and those from Germany HUF 56 bln.

Spending by Hungarians on holiday abroad climbed 65% to HUF 262 bln and was 21% higher than before the pandemic. That spending rose because of an increase in the number of trips, longer stays, and inflation, KSH said.

Hungarians spent the most, around HUF 49 bln, in Austria. They spent HUF 36 bln in Germany and HUF 24 bln in Italy.

For the full year, Hungary's tourism spending surplus rose 47% to HUF 1.228 trillion. Spending by foreign tourists climbed 71% to HUF 2.303 tln and Hungarians' spending abroad increased 10% to HUF 1.075 tln.

KSH noted that comparability of the data with the base period is "limited" because the practice of conducting surveys with people crossing Hungary's border with Ukraine was suspended late in February.
