Spending by Hungarians who took long trips in Hungary in January-September rose twice as fast as the number of travelers compared to the same period a year earlier, figures published by the Central Statistics Office (KSH) show.

The number of Hungarians taking trips of five days or more in Hungary rose 5% in Q1-Q3 compared to the same period a year earlier. During the same period, spending by these travelers rose about 11%. A little less than one-quarter of Hungarian households took long trips in Hungary in Q1-Q3, slightly more than in the same period a year earlier. About 29% of Hungarian travelers taking long trips in Hungary traveled for recreation, 18% traveled to visit friends or relatives and 10% traveled to pursue a hobby. Recreational travelers spent the most, leaving Ft 36.9 billion behind before returning home. Hungarians visiting friends or relatives spent Ft 9.1 billion and hobbyists spent Ft 6.3 billion. Travelers staying at spas accounted for just 6% of the total number of travelers but spent Ft 12.1 billion. Hungarians travelling to conferences accounted for just 1% of the total number of travelers and spent Ft 374 million. Conference travelers' daily travel expenditures, however, were the highest at Ft 6,900. About 35% of Hungarians took trips between two and four days in Q1-Q3, up from 33% in the same period a year earlier. (Mti-Eco)
