German FM: There is still opportunity to solve future status of Kosovo
German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier met with Kosovo’s President Fatmir Sejdiu on Thursday to discuss the future status of Kosovo.
After the meeting, Steinmeier said there is still an opportunity to solve the future status of Kosovo through negotiation. “We must study any feasible mean and urge Serbia and Kosovo to show their flexibility and compromise in the negotiations,” he said. Steinmeier said there was “a ray of hope” that the Troika – the United States, Russia and the European Union - could bridge some of the gap between Serbia and Kosovo by a December deadline. Sejdiu stressed that Kosovo is willing to continue dialogue with Serbia.
Kosovo, a southern Serbian province with a 90% ethnic Albanian population, is seeking independence, but Serbia is prepared to offer only wide-ranging autonomy. The next round of talks is set for Nov. 20 in Brussels, after a meeting in Vienna ended inconclusively on Monday. (peopledaily.com.cn)
