Foreign visitors up 8.5% in January-June

About 16.5 million foreigners visited Hungary in the first half of 2006, and 12.3 million of them paid a one-day visit to the country, the Central Statistics Office (KSH) reported on Monday.
The number of visitors was up 8.5% from 2005 and the number of one-day visitors rose 17.4%. Foreign visitors stayed a total of 42.2 million days in Hungary in the first half of this year, 6.6% more than a year earlier. Foreign visitors spent Ft 394 billion (about €1.347 billion) in Hungary in the January-June period, 7% less than a year earlier. One-day visitors spent Ft 108 billion (about €399 million) or 27% of the total, and their spending was up 15% year-on-year.
More than two-fifth of those paying a one-day visit to Hungary were just crossing the country, mostly from Romania, Serbia or Montenegro. Those arriving for an actual day-long visit were mainly from Slovakia, Austria and Romania.
