Domestic tourism on the rise in Hungary

Over a million families, that is 2 million 788 thousand adults and children are going on vacation in this year’s main season. 70% of them will not leave the country, while 30% go abroad. This means that only 41% of households can afford vacations.

A total of 1.2 million trips are planned for the period between May and September, as 13% of the families taking a vacation will travel both abroad and in Hungary (4% of the total population). One-third of people going on vacation are 30 to 49 years old, while the second largest age group is that of 18 to 24.

The most popular destination is lake Balaton (487,000 trips), followed by Croatia (156,000 trips), Northern Hungary and the Northern Lowland (125,000 trips each), and Greece (110,000 trips), while Italy places number seven with 72,000 planned trips.

The duration of travel in Hungary averages at 5.5 days, abroad at 9.8 days. Total spending on vacation is Ft 60.3 billion ($330 million), a 10% increase compared to 2006. (Magyar Hirlap)
