Dental tourism in Hungary
Affordable healthcare is tempting Britons east in search of treatment. Sandra Lawrence mixes dental pain and holiday pleasure.

Nasty things, nachos. One minute you’re happily munching, the next you’re crunching on your own tooth. A visit to my dentist reveals the tooth to be unsalvageable, leaving me with three options - doing nothing, having a crown which would involve scoring two perfectly serviceable teeth on either side or splashing out on an implant. My dentist gives me a quote for an implant. I am shocked. „£2,900? I could have a holiday for that!”

I call Perfect Profiles, which specialises in cosmetic and dental surgery abroad. I like the idea of combining a trip to Budapest with saving money on dentistry. Perfect Profiles offers weekend breaks that allow you to inspect the clinic before you make a choice. But I just want to get on with it so make date for next week. If my mouth is suitable, they will be able to perform the surgery almost immediately.
I am satisfied that all the work is insured and guaranteed, and almost feel excited... I am met at the airport and taken to the modern Danubius Hotel Thermal on Margitsziget (Margaret Island) in the center of Budapest, a leafy oasis in summer, with boating lakes, tennis courts and a little zoo. In freezing February, exterior amenities are more limited. The hotel’s spa, however, is just the ticket. Zsuzsa Gyurján, Perfect Profiles’s representative in Budapest, is at the clinic to meet me.
She speaks excellent English and is keen to make sure that any worries I have are quickly dealt with. While she’s showing me around, I take a look at the clinical areas - marble hallways and spanking new equipment. Since my appointment isn’t until tomorrow, I take a long swim and relax by the pool. It seems to be populated entirely by Britons and Germans, here for various procedures.
At 10:00 a.m. the next day I am in Dr Péter György’s chair, undergoing a general checkup. He’s brisk but pleasant, and again, his English is excellent. He seems to think the implant will be straightforward, though I will need a small bone graft as even in the couple of months since I lost my tooth, my jaw has already started to recede.
