Competition Office fines MÁV Ft 1 bln

The Competition Office (GVH) announced on Thursday it had fined state-owned railway company MÁV Zrt Ft 1 billion for abusing its dominant position on Hungary's rail freight market.

GVH found MÁV had caused unreasonable additional costs to its competitors on the freight transport market, hindered access to privately-owned industrial sidetracks and signed exclusive, long-term transport agreements with the market's biggest bulk shippers, excluding newcomers from the market.
MÁV's freight division was spun off at the start of 2006 as MÁV Cargo. The government recently announced a plan to sell MÁV Cargo and use the proceeds to pay off some of MÁV's debts.
