Balaton ferry company launches 2021 season
Balatoni Hajózási (Bahart), a state-owned company that operates ferries and pleasure boats on Lake Balaton, launched the 2021 season on Saturday, according to a report by state news wire MTI.
Bahart CEO Gábor Veigl told MTI the company targets revenue of a little over HUF 3.5 billion this year, up from HUF 3.3 bln in 2020. He noted that ferry traffic fell 90% last summer, and passenger numbers on pleasure boats dropped 75% because of the pandemic.
Regardless of the declines, he said Bahart still booked a profit of over HUF 1 bln thanks to the sale of HUF 3.6 bln of real estate around the lake, including campgrounds, a hotel, a harbor and staff accommodations.
Veigl said Bahart had decided it will not announce another tender to lease its harbors and will continue to operate them itself.
