University, association launch program to save Hungarian Mangalitsa

The program is needed because there are four types of mangalitsa pigs – blond, swallow-bellied, red and black – and the black variety only numbers 150 out of a total population of 9,500 mangalitsa pigs in the country, according to the news agency. Mangalitsa is a breed distinguished by its curly coat and prized for its marbled meat.
Association boss, Péter Tóth, said mangalitsa hobby farmers from Japan and the United States would travel to Debrecen in the autumn to establish the International Mangalitsa Association, MTI added.
