Plans for HUF 75 million Liget Budapest museum project outlined
Human Resources Minister Zoltán Balog outlined plans yesterday for the HUF 75 billion “Liget Budapest” museum project in Budapest’s city park Városliget: Six museums will be established in five buildings along the Dózsa György thoroughfare, including the New National Gallery and Ludwig Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museum of Ethnography, the House of Hungarian Music, the PhotoMuseum Budapest and the Hungarian Architecture Museum, Balog said.
In addition to the five museums, a new state-of-the-art circus will be built, the zoo will be significantly expanded, the lakes and green areas of the park will be modernized.
Additionally, a new science and entertainment center for children will be built and the Museum of Transport will be revamped and expanded, according to Museum of Fine Arts director-general/government commissioner László Baán.
Liget Budapest is expected to attract an additional 1 million tourists to Budapest, so the investment can be recouped relatively soon, according to Baán. In addition to using public monies, talks are underway with OTP Bank about financing one of the new museum buildings, he added.
