Molnár gets tough with striking pharmacists

Health Minister Lajos Molnár yesterday warned that pharmacy owners who choose to take part in the planned nationwide demonstration announced by the Hungarian Chamber of Pharmacists earlier this week may face supervisory proceedings and risk being closed by national health authority ÁNTSz. Druggists on Tuesday unanimously voted to hold a two-hour token strike every Thursday after the Health Ministry failed to respond to a call by the Chamber to hold bilateral talks on the Ministry’s plans to liberalize the sale of some OTC drugs from January next year. Druggists are insisting that this would force several pharmacies to go out of business. Molnár said the walk-out violates health regulations and called on the Chamber to abandon its strike bid.
