Hungary to retain ban on GM crops

Sights

Hungary will continue to make efforts to maintain its ban on genetically modified crops (GMO), Zoltán Gőgös, state secretary at the Ministry of Agriculture, told reporters in Brussels on Monday.

Gőgös spoke following a vote in a special committee of the European Commission, in which a motion seeking Hungary's withdrawal of a protective clause and give the green light to the import of genetically modified maize had not been given the necessary majority. The Hungarian government had extended the ban once already last January and launched an investigation to see clearly on health hazards.
The state secretary warned that Hungary's position of a complete ban of GMOs could not be maintained by way of protective clauses in the long run, and urged that parliament pass a bill to govern simultaneous production of traditional and genetically treated crops. Gőgös added that the proposed legislation would be stringent and farmers wishing to produce GMOs would be required to obtain special permits.
