In response to Orbán’s comments in opposition to immigration, U.S. Chargé d’Affaires André Goodfriend has turned to the son of Hungary’s first king, St. Stephen, in his twitter post. “Over lunch, among other things, discussed St. Stephen’s advice about the benefit of diversity,” Goodfriend said.

In the tweet, Goodfriend also included a hyperlink to St. Stephen’s ten commandments to his son St. Imre, the sixth of which highlights the benefits of accepting immigrants into one’s nation. Goodfriend also included a link to a message from John Paul II on the occasion of the millennium of St Stephen’s coronation. In his message the Pope reiterated the words of St. Stephen 2,000 years later as a precedent to follow.
