Farmers postpone nationwide demonstrations

Sights

Conservative farmer association Magosz announced yesterday it will postpone nationwide farmers' demonstrations until next week, so as not to disturb the upcoming local elections, the organization's chairman said. The association originally planned to start demonstrations this week and hold them through next week, but the Magosz board has decided to set new dates at a meeting next Tuesday, István Jakab said. The new dates and locations will be made public on the Magosz web site, he added. Magosz deputy chair Béla Bagi said the government's planned reforms had boiled down to introducing austerity measures and farmers were unwilling to accept them because they offered “no perspective.” According to Jakab, the government has failed to allocate adequate time for social debate on and coordination of the rural development strategy.
