Cyprus bans animal imports from UK for aftosa
Cyprus has banned animal imports from Britain after a case of aftosa was found there, the Cypriot government announced on Sunday.
Other emergency measures include that visitors arriving on the Mediterranean island from Britain should pass over a special de- contamination mat, said Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment Photis Photiou. He added that Cypriot authorities were trying to turn back a shipment that was due to arrive on Sunday or Monday with 80 animals from UK.
However, „there is no cause for panic,” Cyprus News Agency quoted Photiou as saying. Aftosa, also known as foot-and-mouth disease, is a highly contagious viral disease affecting practically all cloven-footed domesticated mammals, including cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs. (english.people.com.cn)
