2007 – best summer season in last 17 years for Romania
“This result is based on the occupation degree of the littoral of 80% during the week days, while at the end of the week it exceeds 110%,” stressed the minister Ovidiu Silaghi.
Romania registers this year the best summer season of the last 17 years, declared the minister for small and medium sized enterprises, trade, tourism and liberal professions, Ovidiu Silaghi told a press conference, Rompres informs.
According to the Federation of the Owners from Romanian Tourism (FPTR), the Romanian littoral has been this year the undeniable star of the favorite destinations of the Romanians, almost one million Romanians being expected until the end of the season. A number of 3.005 million foreign visitors were registered at the border check points of Romania, at the end of the first semester of this year, 18.2% more than the same period of the past year, according to the data of the Ministry for SMEs, Trade, Tourism and Liberal Professions.
According to statistics, most of the foreign visitors come from European countries (almost 94%), and nearly 60% of the total foreign visitors come from European Union countries. The number of foreign tourists who visit Romania will grow 22% this year over the past year. According to a Peacock Hotels survey, quoted by Antena 3 TV, the number of tourists who came last year to Romania rose to almost two million. Tourism contributed 4.85% to GDP in 2006, a value that could reach almost seven per cent in the next six years.
The main Romanian destination in 2007 has been so far Sibiu – European Capital of Culture. The same Peacock Hotels survey shows that Bucharest is an attractive target in regard to hotel development and has a great development potential compared to other cities in Europe, both in regard to the average occupation level and the net tariff charged. The number of investments in hotels on the Romanian market will reach the acme in the next five-six years, Bucharest being set to have until 2010 minimum 9,000 accommodation places. The major investments will focus on properties classified in an upper class, evidencing the trend to develop hotels with a reasonable capacity of 150-200 rooms.
The investment explosion in hotels will reach a peak in the next five-six years, doubling the capacity which exists in Bucharest and increasing significantly the national capacity. The survey shows that the North of Bucharest has headlined the development so far, and the North continues to be the area that will generate the most spectacular and extensive real estate and hostelry projects.
