Tarlós recommends flight ban between midnight and 5 a.m.

Mayor of Budapest István Tarlós said he would recommend closing Ferenc Liszt International Airport to flights between midnight and 5 a.m. to keep noise down, according to reports by current affairs website hvg.hu and various other local media.

Noise pollution is a huge problem around airports all over the world, and aviation professionals and scientists have been trying to come up with solutions for a long time, noted hvg.hu.

As reported earlier, traffic has increased considerably at Ferenc Liszt International Airport in the past few years: only last year, nearly 14.9 million passengers used the airport, 13.5% more than a year earlier.

According to the Socialist Party (MSZP), the solution to the problem of air and noise pollution at Ferenc Liszt International Airport would be to build a new airport some 30-40 kilometers from Budapest, reported online news portal index.hu.

In January, airport development spending of an additional HUF 225 billion was announced, noted index.hu. It recalled that Gergely Karácsony, the mayor of Budapestʼs Zugló district and the MSZP candidate for Budapest mayor in local elections in the fall, said a few weeks ago that the money should be used for a new airport further away from the center of the capital.

Meanwhile, Mayor Tarlós also announced the launch of a HUF 8.3 billion program to pave dirt roads in the capital. The program, an initiative of Fidesz district mayors, will start with central government financing, he said. There are 225 km of unpaved roads in the capital, he added.
