Talks on state takeover of public transport to start this week

Budapest’s municipal council and the National Development Ministry are scheduled to start negotiations on the Hungarian stateʼs takeover of the management of the agglomeration’s public transport systems this week, Hungarian daily Magyar Idők reported on Saturday.

The delegations of the two sides will be led by Budapest Mayor István Tarlós and Development Minister Miklós Seszták, the paper reported.
The plan for the transfer of the management of public transport to the government must be approved at a general meeting of the municipal council, Hungarian news agency MTI reported, adding that the next general meeting is scheduled for February 17.
The state takeover of the management of public transport in the agglomeration area was announced by Cabinet Chief János Lázár on Thursday.
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Budapest Mayor István Tarlós held talks in December and January on the financing of Budapest’s transportation system. Tarlós was reportedly unhappy with the results of the negotiations.
