More than 2,300 Stipendium Hungaricum students from 49 countries have begun their studies at Hungarian universities in the fall semester, under the scholarship program founded by the Ministry of Human Capacities (EMMI) and organized by the Tempus Public Foundation (TKA), according to a press release issued yesterday.

The newcomers were welcomed by András Nemeslaki, president of TKA, at the Stipendium Hungaricum Welcome Reception in Budapest last week. Nemeslaki said the foundation received more than 13,000 applications only this year, adding that the organization is working on developing the network of participating Hungarian higher education institutions in order to enhance program quality and facilitate a wider choice of programs and student services, the press statement noted.

A total of 27 Hungarian higher education institutions currently participate in the program, including universities in Budapest, Pécs, Debrecen, Gödöllő, Szeged and Miskolc.

The program was launched with 50 students in 2013, while today it provides scholarships for 3,500 foreign students, Stipendium Hungaricum coordinator Márton Bélik said. The number is constantly growing, as the foundation expects 4,000 new students next year, Bélik added. The program aims to include even more countries, with the next applications to be invited in January 2017.
