Pussy Riot members confirm attendance at Sziget Festival
Two members of legendary feminist-punk band Pussy Riot, known for their anti-Putin views, confirmed at the last minute that they will perform at Hungary’s Sziget festival, the organizers announced yesterday.
The two members, Nadia and Masha, arrive at the “Island of Freedom” on the heels of a performance at the Glastonbury Festival at the end of June. They will be available for an interactive roundtable discussion on August 14 to speak about their pussy revolution as well as other topics.
Led by Nadia Tolokonnikova and Masha Alyokhina, the punk activist group was formed on the very night Vladimir Putin was re-elected in September 2011. The collective became world-renowned for their Putin-opposing performances, show trial, imprisonment and sentence in penal colonies.
However, after strong international pressure, they were released from prison. Artists that support their initiative include Madonna, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Franz Ferdinand, among others.
The press release notes that the political views of the band are a fusion of feminism and anti autocracy, adding that their performances and songs are feminist proclamations in the name of democracy and gender equality.
Commenting on the band’s performance at the Glastonbury Festival, BBC wrote: "It was awesome, they are totally, unbelievably inspiring. They inspire a generation," while The Guardian noted that "Pussy Riot proved that revolution is still alive at Glastonbury."
