Metro 3 stoppage could trigger traffic chaos
The Hungarian capital could face serious traffic jams if the renovation of its busiest metro line No. 3 is not solved properly, and the Center for Budapest Transport (BKK) is currently working on possible solutions, online news portal index.hu reported today.
Kálmán Dabóczi, CEO of the Center for Budapest Transport (BKK), confirmed to index.hu that emergency plans are being established for the possible eventuality of the metro line being forced to cease operation if it becomes too dangerous to use. Talks on necessary renovations of the metro line have been going on for months, according to media reports, and some say the line is in such a bad condition that it may become too dangerous.
The company is working on two emergency plans. One covers today’s possible decision by the Budapest General Assembly not to outsource the provision of replacement buses to an outside company during renovations, after the Public Procurement Arbitration Board (KDB) suspended a tender called by the BKK on September 23. The other plan covers the eventuality of the line being shut down if it becomes too dangerous.
In either event, bypassing the main metro line in the capital would require the deployment of 150-200 buses and 10-15 trams, according to the online daily; however, it notes that approximately 150 buses are still missing from the plan.
