Mayor: More P+R places needed

Before the congestion charge can be introduced in Budapest, at least 20,000 park and ride spaces need to be built, city mayor István Tarlós said late yesterday in an interview with HírTV.

"I estimate at least 20,000 parking spaces are necessary to make the introduction of a congestion charge justified on ethical and technical grounds," the mayor said. He added that currently there are approximately 4,000-5,000 P+R spaces in the city, however available funds and allocations from the government could enable the construction of a further 8-10 P+R complexes. About HUF 2 bln of European Union funding could be used for the construction of such facilities, he added.
