Toyota to build Prius at next US plant – Nikkei
Toyota Motor Corp will switch gears and produce the Prius hybrid and other passenger cars at its yet-to-be-built Mississippi factory instead of the Highlander sport utility vehicle, a daily newspaper Nikkei reported in its Thursday evening edition.
Citing company sources, the paper said the world’s biggest automaker would also likely suspend production at one of two assembly lines at its Indiana factory by year-end for at least six months in light of spiraling demand for large pickup trucks and SUVs built at that plant.
A Toyota spokesman said the company could not comment on the report. The change in plans at Mississippi may mean the factory may not come onstream until 2011, more than a year behind original plans, the newspaper said. (Reuters)
