Tobacco concession licence tender draws strong interest

Tobacco sales applications under a new state concession exceeded the number of licences available by several times over, daily Magyar Hirlap said. Éva Pordán, chief secretary of the Hungarian Association of Tobacco Retailers, told the paper that there was strong interest for the 7,000 available licences. The tender was made more attractive by legislative changes broadening the scale of products the tobacco shops can offer, she added. Lawmakers recently approved amendments allowing tobacco shops to sell lottery tickets, spirits, beverages and newspapers. Legislation approved last September establishes a state monopoly on the retail sale of tobacco products from July 1, 2013. Businesses had until February 22 to apply for tobacco sales licences.
