Stadler to set up production unit in Hungary
The board of Swiss train maker Stadler Rail AG has decided to set up a production unit in Hungary, Stadler announced in Budapest on Friday.
The company said it is still looking for a site in Hungary to build the unit. Zoltán Dunai, Stadler's representative in Hungary, said late in June that Stadler was considering Hungary as a possible site for expanding its production capacity. Stadler aimed to build a factory to produce at least 50-60 of its Flirt suburban rail vehicles a year, generating revenue of Ft 25 billion.
Stadler won the contract to deliver 30 of its Flirt models for Hungarian state railways MÁV Zrt, with an option to deliver a further 30, in a much-disputed tender last summer. The contract for delivery of the units came into force only on March 22, after MÁV arranged financing for the purchase early March. Dunai said earlier that Stadler would ship the first two Flirts by the end of 2006 and shorten the deadline for delivering the last of the trains to March 2007.
Stadler also announced on Friday it had won a tender to deliver 14 Flirt trains to Poland for CHF 100 million (Ft 18 billion), including the cost of servicing the vehicles for three years and training the vehicles' operators.
