Hungarian farmers produce around half of the horseradish in the European Union, the National Agriculture Chamber (NAK) said on Friday, according to a report by state news wire MTI.

Last season, growers produced over 10,000 tonnes of the crop, a fixture on the Easter table, exporting 80-90%, mostly fresh horseradish, to Germany, Poland, the United Kingdom, and the Czech Republic among other EU markets.

Horseradish is grown mainly by small farmers, providing a livelihood for "several hundred" families, NAK said. The crop was grown on 1,194 hectares last year.
