Hungary’s retail sales grow 6% in May

Hungary’s volume of retail sales was up by 6% in May, according to raw data, compared to the same month a year earlier, and grew by 5.5% adjusted for calendar effects, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) said this morning in a second estimate of data that was 0.1 of a percentage point higher than that published in the first estimate, KSH noted.
The volume of sales, adjusted for calendar effects, rose by 2.3% in specialized and non-specialized food shops, by 10.3% in non-food retail shops and by 4.3% in automotive fuel retailing, according to KSH.
Sales in the national retail trade network as well as in mail order and internet retailing totalled HUF 854 billion at current prices, in May. Food, drinks and tobacco stores accounted for 46% of all retail sales, while the relevant figures for non-food retail shops and the network of petrol stations were 38% and 16% respectively, according to KSH.
In the January-May period, the volume of sales in retail shops increased by 3.5%, as compared to the same period of the previous year. The volume of sales rose by 2.0% in food, drinks and tobacco shops, by 6.0% in non-food retail trade and by 3.0% in automotive fuel retailing, KSH added.
