Government to revise heating subsidies

Food

As of January 1, the current system of across-the-board subsidies built into the price of natural gas may be replaced by five eligibility categories, the daily Népszabadság claimed in its Saturday issue, quoting unnamed sources.

According to the newspaper, the government is planning to scrap the existing system of subsidizing household heating costs on an equal basis without distinction between consumers, introduced three years ago and supplemented with additional financial aid to the most impoverished groups of society. The new draft proposes five income brackets associated with decreasing subsidy rates; that is, households with a per capita income of two, two-and-a-half, three, or three-and-a-half times the Ft 25,800 minimum retirement pension, plus those even better off.
