Gov't to put no money into bad healthcare system

The government will not put any more money into badly structured institutions, Health Minister Lajos Molnár told journalists on Thursday.

Molnár was asked to respond to pediatricians' claims that the operation of children's hospitals could come under threat before the end of the year with planned health care funding cuts and utility prices going up. Molnár insisted that the government could no longer finance the current structures, that there were many children's wards and beds used inefficiently. Molnár said he would open talks with institution heads and discuss how money could be found for restructuring in the near future.
Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány said earlier this week that transforming the health care system would require a very difficult 18-24 months, during which he hoped that the institutions would continue to operate but could not guarantee that there would be no obstacles.
