Domestic tourism slightly up in first half
About 75.8% of Hungarian households took trips within Hungary in the first half of 2006, up from 68.8% in the same period a year earlier, but most travelers still remained day-trippers, the Central Statistics Office (KSH) reported on Thursday.
About 66.3% of households took day trips in the first half of 2006. Just 28.8% took trips of two to four days and only 15.8% left home for longer than five days. Households traveling within Hungary spent Ft 40 billion (€144.9 million) in the first half of 2006, up 6% from the same period a year earlier. About 46% of their spending went toward food and accommodation and 12% was used to pay for fuel. They spent about 10% more on fuel and about 6% less on cultural programs during the period.
Recreational travel accounted for about one-fourth of travel expenditures in the first half of 2006. Trips to other cities and to spas each accounted for about one-tenth of the total, and trips to see relatives and friends accounted for a little less than one-tenth of the total.
