Gov’t plans tax on trucks from 2008
Hungary has plans to levy a road tax on heavy-goods trucks from next year, national daily Népszabadság reported on Wednesday.
The Economy and Transport Ministry wants to charge trucks weighing over 7.5 tons for using more than 50 of Hungary's main roads, most of them trans-border routes, the paper wrote. Drivers avoiding the payment would face heavy fines. Fines will also be levied on drivers who make diversions from the main roads and use secondary roads, the paper said.
The ministry's idea is to get more trucks to use the toll motorways instead of clogging up main roads, many of which pass through residential areas.
The plan, which is still awaiting approval, would be a base to introduce an electronic road toll payment system based on distance traveled rather than a fixed fee, Népszabadság said. The earliest date likely for introducing the electronic payment system is the start of 2008.
