‘100,000 against the Internet tax campaign’ receives award
The “100 thousand against the Internet tax” campaign, which successfully prevented the Hungarian government from implementing their proposed internet-tax, was honored with the European Democratic Citizenship Award Campaign of the Year prize, according to an announcement by the European Civic Forum.
The “100 thousand” movement organized the biggest opposition demonstration in the past 25 years in Hungary (pictured), the award-givers say in a document published on the website of the European Civic Forum. Viktor Orbán’s re-elected government, which at the time had a supermajority, had no other choice but to withdraw their proposal, the document adds.
“This was the first – and the last time so far for the government in which they faced civil opposition and had to completely abort their plans. The success of the protest sparked further civic protests against the government’s policies throughout all of Hungary,” the Civic Forum says in the document.
A crowd estimated by Reuters to have reached more than 100,000 people gathered for the second demonstration in three days to oppose the proposed internet tax, a year ago on October 29.
The group that organized two marches against the internet tax called for a demonstration on October 31, to celebrate Prime Minister Viktor Orbánʼs decision to delay the tax.
The Hungarian Parliamentʼs economic committee officially withdrew the planned tax on internet usage at the governmentʼs request during a meeting on November 5.
