Vác offered statue of controversial anti-Semite
After plans to erect a statue of anti-Semitic Hungarian minister Bálint Hóman in Székesfehérvár, central Hungary, were abandoned following international and local protests, the city of Vác, north of Budapest, has been offered the statue, online daily index.hu reported today.
Index.hu gained access to city records outlining the minutes of a meeting of Vác’s Urban Planning and Environmental Protection committee during which the committee was informed about an offer by the Bálint Hóman Foundation to gift the statue to the city of Vác.
In that same meeting, a proposal was also put forward by three members of the committee to change the name of a street in Vác named that is named after Hóman to Híradó utca.
In the event that the city of Vác does not allow the statue to be installed in a public place, a private site will be designated, according to index.hu.
The mayor of Vác declined to comment on indexʼs queries about cityʼs plans for the statue.
Hóman was a Hungarian minister active in the 1930s and ’40s whom in addition to being a prominent historian and academic was also responsible for drafting a raft of anti-Jewish laws and supported efforts to deport of 420,000 Jews to Auschwitz in 1944, according to reports.
