FTC expelled from top division
The Hungarian Football Association (MLSz) on Wednesday expelled Ferencváros (FTC), Hungary's most successful football club, from the top division because of unpaid debt, forcing the club to compete in the second division for the first time in its history, Bloomberg reported on Wednesday.
FTC owes money to players, coaches, subcontractors and the MLSz, whose licensing committee late last night decided to take action, it said on its website. The club finished sixth out of 16 last season.
FTC is the only club to have played continuously in the top Hungarian division since its inception in 1901, winning a record 28 titles. In 1965, it became the country's only side to gain a European trophy, lifting the precursor to the UEFA Cup, and qualified for European competitions 10 times in the past decade.
