With another 20 organizations signing the memorandum of understanding of the Circular Economy Platform, founded last November by the Business Council for Sustainable Development in Hungary (BCSDH), the Netherlands Embassy, and the Ministry for Innovation and Technology, the member count now stands at 68.

After the signing ceremony at the residence of the ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, participants were informed about the plans and ongoing work for 2019, according to a press release sent to the Budapest Business Journal.

“The Circular Economy Platform was created as an initiative to help the transition from a linear to a circular economy,” said BCSDH President Attila Chikán Jr. at the ceremony. “The aim of the platform is to create collaboration and share knowledge between the corporate, governmental, scientific and civil sectors.”

The European Commission (EC) published a comprehensive report on the implementation of the Circular Economy Action Plan this March. The report says investment in innovation is crucial for accelerating the transition to a circular economy. To cut plastic waste, proposals from the EC stressed the use of sound and efficient waste management systems, and the development of markets for secondary raw materials, which are also an essential building block of a circular economy.

“From an environmental point of view, the transition to a circular economy contributes to the proper functioning of a sustainable, low-carbon, resource-efficient and competitive economy,” emphasized Balázs Weingartner, minister of state for sustainability at the Ministry for Innovation and Technology. “Hungary may be able to play a leading role in the region,” he added.

“The professional work of the Platform has already begun, with the establishment of the Circular Economy Working Group,” added Irén Márta, managing director of the BCSDH. “The first and most important step is to identify the state of the circular economy in Hungary so we can set goals and start a discussion and cooperate with regard to the most relevant issues. The results of the survey will be presented at the Circular Economy Summit on November 28.”

In his opening remarks at the ceremony, Dutch Ambassador René van Hell welcomed the new signatories of the platform, emphasizing the diversity that contributes to synergy among stakeholders. He also highlighted the lively Dutch circular economy community, illustrated by an online platform called circulairondernemen.nl, which provides lots of information, cross-border contacts, and match-making opportunities.

The embassy pledged to continue its supporting activities in all things circular, including creating a video about best practices and holding the Circular Economy Summit in November.
