Muni council reports 'unfavorable' metro carriage contract to police
Budapest municipal council members have filed a report with the police regarding a contract signed by the capital's former leadership to renovate carriages on the number 3 metro line, Budapest mayor Gergely Karácsony said in a post on his Facebook page on Wednesday, according to a report by state news wire MTI.
"The probe related to the procurement of the M3 metro carriages that I ordered so everybody can finally clearly see and understand exactly what happened when the previous city leadership agreed on such an unfavorable construction has finished," Karácsony said.
"We got outdated metro carriages without air conditioning for almost HUF 70 billion, so naturally somebody has to take responsibility, so today we filed a report with the police in the name of the leaders of the group that hold the majority in the municipal council," he added.
Russia's Metrowagonmash won a tender in 2015 to renovate 37 trains on the number 3 metro line with a bid of EUR 219 million. Company officials said 70% of the parts of the trains - some around 40 years old - were replaced.
