Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony on Monday said city leaders do not back the construction of a campus for China's Fudan University at a brownfield site in the capital's District IX designated for a student quarter based on information offered at talks with Innovation and Technology Minister László Palkovics, according to a report by news agency MTI.

At a press conference following more than two hours of talks with Palkovics and District IX mayor Krisztina Baranyi, Karácsony said the government's plans for the site involve the construction of an "elite Chinese private university", while some 8,000 dormitory spots are shrunk into "inhumanely" crowded conditions.

He added that the talks with Palkovics were "long and came to nothing".

Baranyi said the area designated for the student quarter had been reduced from 26 ha to 7 ha.

At a separate press conference on Monday, Palkovics said plans for the student quarter established in 2017 contained a university development, dormitory development, student commons, and a research institution.

He noted Karácsony had disputed the inclusion of a university in the original plan.

Palkovics put the estimated cost of construction of the Fudan Hungary University campus at HUF 440 billion. He added that a residual HUF 100 bln would be earmarked not for the university but for general-purpose institutions.
