Budapest's landmark Chain Bridge will be fully closed for traffic from 4 a.m. on Wednesday for renovation works scheduled for 18 months, according to a report by state news wire MTI.

Public transport services using the bridge will be rerouted.

According to earlier information from the Budapest Public Transport Center (BKK), road traffic is expected to restart in December 2022 but pedestrians would only be allowed back on the bridge once the renovation work is finished, in August 2023.

Refurbishment of the bridge will include reconstruction of the central lanes and pavements, repairs to the steel structures, insulation of the underground chain-chambers, and building their flood protection system.

The iconic stone lion statues of the bridge will also be renovated and the whole structure will be equipped with a new LED lighting system.
