Budapest Airport announces layoffs because of Malév grounding

Budapest Airport, the operator of Liszt Ferenc International Airport Budapest, on Wednesday said it would lay off 250 people because of the grounding of national carrier Malév.

Budapest Airport said it had no other choice but to make the layoffs. About 1.5 million of Malév's 3.2 million passengers at the airport were transfer passengers, and other airlines, mainly low-fare airlines, have offered to take up only about 1 million of that capacity, it explained.

In addition to the lost passenger numbers, Budapest Airport said it would lose Malév's lease of office space and other facilities, parking spaces and the airline's maintenance base.

Budapest Airport said it had decided on several cost-saving and cost-saving measures, including suspending more than 60 million in investments.
