Orbán: Spending freeze precautionary measure

History

The HUF 110 bln freeze in central budget spending, which was announced yesterday, is a “precautionary measure”, Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said in his regular radio interview today.

The PM told Hungarian public broadcaster Kossuth Rádió that this year’s budget deficit target of 2.9% of the GDP can be met easily by following Economy Minister Mihály Varga’s proposal to freeze spending. He added that the target would be achievable without those measures, but said that it was good to take this "precautionary measure".

By achieving the objected 2.9% deficit target, Orbán said, the Hungarian government can make it “clear to the country and the world” that Parliament is doing everything possible to keep to meet its budget obligations.
