Official says Fidesz won't change public assembly law

Government

László L. Simon, state secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office (shown), said yesterday that, regardless of the remarks of a Fidesz MP, the Hungarian government has no intention of amending the law on freedom of public assembly, and would not seek new restrictions on public gatherings.

Praising the “country’s democratic transition”, Simon argued that freedom of public assembly without any restrictions has been one of the main achievements of Hungarian democracy.

An MP of the governing Fidesz party, Gergely Gulyás, said in December during an interview with Hungarian daily Népszabadság, that, in his opionion, the laws and regulations on freedom of public assemby need to be changed. Gulyás insisted that his opinion is in no way connected wih the recent anti-government demonstrations.
