Siemens wins €109 mln order for Budapest driverless metro
Siemens AG, Germany's largest maker of trains, won an order worth €109 million (Ft 29.6 billion) to install the automatic guidance system of a Budapest subway line which will be Hungary's first driverless metro, Bloomberg reported.
The contract also includes the electrification of the line, Munich-based Siemens said in an e-mailed statement today. The fully automatic operation of the line, which is currently under construction in the Hungarian capital, will allow a maximum speed of 80 kilometers per hour, the company said. The planned metro route, which is scheduled to start operations in May 2010, will pass underneath the Danube and will connect District 11 in the south and District 15 in the east.
The order may help Siemens restore its image in Hungary. The company in July temporarily took some Budapest trams out of service to fix problems such as irregular power supply or faulty doors that appeared a couple of weeks after the vehicles started running.
