Mass transport free in Budapest on European Car Free Day

Passengers will be allowed to travel free on the vehicles of the Budapest Transport Company on September 22, Mayor Gábor Demszky told reporters in Budapest on Monday. The Car Free Day will be the highlight of the European Mobility Week in which the city will participate for the fifth time. The week will be designed to facilitate widespread debate on the necessity for changes in behaviour in relation to mobility and in particular the use of private cars. The mayor announced that Andrássy Avenue, a major traffic artery of the city, would be closed for motorists on September 17 and 22 to demonstrate the common interest of living in an environmentally friendlier city with fewer cars. Demszky said that, once re-elected for his fifth term on October 1, he would promote mass transport, pedestrian traffic and cycling. (Mti)
