Taxi drivers protest Uber
Hundreds of Hungarian taxi drivers held a demonstration yesterday evening in downtown Budapest, in an attempt to express their opposition to San Francisco-based ride sharing service Uber始s operations in the country.
The Hungarian National Taxi Driver始s Association is asking the government to put an end to what they consider an illegal service, which they say has been cutting into the wages of taxi drivers since Uber first appeared in November 2014.
The National Association of Private Forwarders sent a petition to the Parliamentary State Secretary for National Development, J谩nos F贸nagy, who said the issue was being discussed, with a cabinet debate planned for Wednesday.
National Economy Minister Mih谩ly Varga recently ordered the National Tax and Customs Authority (NAV) to scrutinize Uber drivers. NAV officers found irregularities with every driver and fined each HUF 200,000.
Uber始s international launcher Rob Khazzam says the company works within Hungary始s tax requirements and laws and is open to discussions with Hungarian stakeholders.
