Slovenia to tackle EU defense duties

History

Slovenia will take charge of EU defense issues as early as today, with priority being given to the west Balkans.

Slovenian Defense Minister Karl Erjavec, whose country will assume the EU presidency on January 1, will take over from his Portuguese counterpart today. In the presence of a European trio of current and future presiding member-states – Portugal, Slovenia and Germany – the Portuguese defense minister, currently in Brdo near Kranje, will hand over his duties to Erjavec.

The main activities within the EU’s security and defense policy domain will be focussed primarily on the west Balkans in the form of crisis reactions, the development and consolidation of military potential, together with the development of the European Defense Agency. (B92)
