Slovakia recalls Iraq contingent

History

Slovakia’s Parliament has decided on pulling out its regiments from Iraq later this month, while making a commitment to up military presence in Afghanistan.

The withdrawal of the forces was proposed by the government after Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico announced the return home of the troops by February 2008. The Parliament also decided to deploy another 50 soldiers in the Afghan territory. In October, Fico said that despite the withdrawal 11 soldiers will stay in Iraq to deactivate land mines. Five of them will train local soldiers and the rest will coordinate their work with occupied allies.

Slovakia supported the US-British invasion of Iraq in March 2003, and after the occupation it deployed 100 military engineers in that Arab country.
