Safety measures on M0 round Budapest

History

The M0 motorway ring will be equipped with permanent speed control cameras at 5 locations in 4 to 5 months' time. The number of accidents increased by 40% here due to significant increases in traffic.

Other changes to improve safety on the route include more frequent checks, and using a mobile device to screen trucks carrying excessive loads. On a longer term the southern section of the M0 will be widened to 3 lanes each way. 42,000-43,000 vehicles use the M0 daily, and 443 accidents happened in the first 9 months. Most of them are caused by tailgating, or violating the rules of changing lanes.

In other news related to the M0, the future Megyeri Bridge (Northern M0 Bridge), which will constituted part of the route, connecting Budakalász and Újpest will be the longest bridge in Hungary (1862 meters) and the most modern in Central Europe, writes the daily Magyar Hírlap. The construction, which will cost Ft 61.9 billion, started last spring and will be finished in August, 2008.

The place of the motorway bridge was determined by beltway motorway M0, said chief architect Mátyás Hunyadi. There will be 2+2 lanes, but two additional lanes can be added later. The north pavement will be for the disabled and cyclists and the south pavement for pedestrians. The most spectacular element of the bridge will be the two huge (100 meter high) A-shaped elements.
